How You Can Spot Fake Diplomas

By Jeanette Riggs

For many reasons, be it to further their careers or simply to impress their friends, many people obtain fake diplomas. These are presented as an achievement that the holder of said certificate has not earned and has not right to claim. But there are ways of spotting their scam, and these ways are detailed in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, know that a lot of them are simple to detect. There might be typos on the actual certificate, or a basic format that anybody could put together with Microsoft Frontpage. Not all certificates are as simple to detect as this, though.

There are plenty of fake diplomas mills in operation that specialise in churning out professional looking certificates. Unlike actual colleges and universities which demand several years of study for the right to a qualification, the mills have a different criteria. All they require is payment, and they will issue you with the desired document.

You can expose these authentically produced frauds as well, however this will demand a touch more effort. One of your first actions is to find out what institution provided this credential. The game is up if the institution itself does not actually exist.

If such an institution does exist, that alone does not confer legitimacy. You should check if they have regional or national accreditation from a body that is recognised by the department of education. An institution that has no such accreditation has not got worthwhile qualifications to offer.

The accreditation has to come from a body with the department of education's recognition. If it does not, then in all likelihood the body is itself a sham. And should that be true, then you must not be bamboozled into thinking that either the organisation or the body are worthy of your trust.

If you do find that an institution which a person claims to have been educated at is real, but you have cause to doubt the person, there are two effective ways to confirm your suspicions. The first is to contact the relevant institution. The second is to ask a few in depth questions of the person concerned.

The organisation will have a database on all of their students, past and present. So a simple phone call will be able to determine if someone has studied there before. This should be sufficient to clarify a person's claims to this 'alma mater'.

But a few well asked questions should also be enough to verify these claims. Ask them what they studied, what topics were covered on these courses, how they have been applicable in their subsequent career, and similar queries of this kind. These should be enough to determine if a person is being truthful or if they are lying.

To sum up, then, the ability to spot fake diplomas often relies on how good the presented credential looks. In all cases, though, irrespective of the effort put into producing a credible credential, it can be exposed provided you are willing to make an effort to do just this. Such an effort will benefit from adherence to the tips that are presented in the paragraphs above.
