How To Keep Your Hardwood Floors Looking Great

By Rob Terry

There are many precautions that should be taken when there are hardwood floors in the home, in order to preserve their pristine condition. This type of flooring is highly popular given its superior durability and the fact that it is not a germ magnet like carpet tends to be. Preventing various forms of damage is not difficult to do and it will also help to lower the costs of maintenance.

Buying covers for furniture that moves about will help you to prevent scuffs, scratches and deep gouges from being dug into your floor each time an item is pushed or pulled. You can buy these at a local hardwood shop and they do not have to be noticeable. Felt coverings on the bottoms of your chairs can prevent massive damages from happening.

Placing mats or rugs in areas of high traffic provides a number of advantages. Your home will stay warmer and people will be less likely to slip and fall. These can also collect a lot of the small, gritty debris that causes smaller scratches.

Make your house a shoe-free residence and be sure to put mats in your entryways and exits. People can track in a lot of dust and dirt when shoes are worn into the home. Small pebbles and other outdoor items will usually cause minor damages and they will also increase the need to sweep and mop.

It is a bad idea to mop your floors before you have taken the time to either sweep up or vacuum up the surface debris. Using a mop to rake these things across the floor will wreak havoc on its surface. Sweeping the floor surface clean of these things will not take long at all and it will definitely help to protect the aesthetics of your floor.

Mopping should be done with a pail of warm water that has been mixed with several caps of white vinegar. All excess water should be removed from the hardwood floors and you can open your windows and doors to make sure that the surface dries fast. You should do this only when necessary so that the potential for water damage is limited.
